Basic Baked Sweet Potato

My Thoughts

The sweet potato. An often overlooked side item if you're not near the holidays. Also, all to often, covered in charred marshmallows and looking like a sticky nightmare (sorry not a fan of the classic Thanksgiving table staple, but I do like sweet potatoes!). Baked sweet potatoes are a whole different story. They are incredibly easy to make, cheap, and very filling. They're also packed with good for you nutrients such as vitamin A, vitamins B, C, & D, calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, thiamin, and zinc. Oh, and the carotenoids which give the potato it's color are antioxidants (I do not just know all this off the top of my head. The health info comes from Web MD).

The How To Do It

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°.
  2. Poke the sweet potatoes all over with a fork, coat them in olive oil and a salt, and wrap them individually with aluminum foil.
  3. Bake for at least 3-3.5 hours or until soft.
  4. Take the potatoes out of the oven and let them cool for 5-10 minutes, or until they are cool enough to take out of the aluminum foil.
  5. Cut a slit into each one and add whatever topping(s) you like. I prefer just butter and maybe a little salt (if the butter is unsalted). The Picky Eater sometimes likes hers with honey, cinnamon, and brown sugar.
